Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko (1923–2003) was a Ukrainian-born physician and researcher who became well known for his work on the relationship between breathing and health. Buteyko graduated from a medical institute in 1946 and later specialized in the treatment of hay fever and asthma.

He was tasked with observing the breathing patterns of critically ill patients. During his observations, he concluded that as their condition worsened, their breathing became faster, louder, and more pronounced.

As a young doctor, Konstantin Buteyko suffered from extremely high blood pressure. Conventional medical treatments did not provide lasting improvement for him. This led him to take an interest in the connection between breathing and health.

One day, while observing his own shallow breathing, he began to wonder whether this breathing pattern might be the cause of his high blood pressure. He started consciously slowing down his breathing and noticed that his blood pressure decreased significantly.

This experience set him on a path of research that ultimately led to the development of the Buteyko Method. Numerous studies are associated with his name, and in countries such as Australia and Ireland, it is considered one of the treatment approaches for asthma.

The essence of the Buteyko breathing method,

to breathe exclusively through the nose, slowly and deeply, using the diaphragm. At the same time, we should reduce the volume of our breathing and slow it down. With these instructions, he aimed to treat overbreathing (hyperventilation), which nowadays—due to our lifestyle—affects many adults and children alike.

Symptoms of overbreathing may include:
